After Drishyam and Oru Indian Pranayakatha added colours to the Christmas season with spectacular box office collections, Malayalam industry has suddenly become silent.

There are no announcements of releases until now, except for London Bridge and Salalah Mobiles next week. Nivin Pauly’s 1983 could also hit the cinemas in the coming weeks.

There are several films made last year that are awaiting release. Asif Ali’s Pakida, Anoop Menon’s Angry Babies, Maqbool Salmaan’s Hangover and a dozen other films that have been awaiting release dates.

The reason here is the issue of satellite rights. After the TV channels refused to give handsome sums for almost every film, Malayalam industry has been facing a big crisis.

This is expected to affect the number of films being made in Malayalam this year and the many films that are already completed have been facing trouble as well.

Usually small budget movies get released during these times when the biggies are out of the race. After a deluge of films last year, this year Malayalam industry could be facing a severe drought!
